Funky Monkey
There is a smoothie shop in the Salmon Creek area of Vancouver that the boys and I used to frequent when we lived there. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called, but it was one of those chain shops and it wasn't Jamba Juice. The name doesn't really matter that much, except that it drives me nuts that I can't remember what the place is called, so if anyone there can clue me in it would really help me sleep at night.
Anyway, Cooper LOVED a smoothie there called the Funky Monkey. It was chocolate, peanut butter and banana. He used to BEG me daily to stop and get him a "Funty Munty" (remember, he has speech issues). Well there is no stopping for a Funky Monkey anywhere around here, so we have created out own, and I do have to say that it is as good as (if not better than) the original.
Since it's that good, I've decided to share our recipe with you, but first you have to start with a different recipe. The first one that you need is our Hot Cocoa mix. Yes, we make our own Hot Cocoa mix. In bulk. Because we drink hot cocoa in bulk. Feel free to 1/2 this recipe if you need to.
Hot Cocoa Mix
16 Cups Powdered Milk
10 Cups Powdered Nesquik Chocolate
6 Cups Powdered Non Dairy Creamer (you can use flavored....I don't, but you could)
Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container.
To serve mix 1/2-3/4 cup of mix in a mug with HOT water.
Top with lots of marshmallows.
Funky Monkey Smoothie
1 1/2 cups Ice
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup Hot Cocoa mix
4 tablespoons peanut butter
two bananas
Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth
Makes 2-3 servings.
Cooper is one happy bush Alaska living boy since we've started making these!

Is that the same hot chocolate recipe mom used when we were kids?
I might have to quarter that hot chocolate mix! Although Madalyn has been on a hot chocolate kick lately. But usually one box of Swiss Miss will last us the whole winter :-)
Your smoothie sounds fabulous...I think that it just might be on the menu for snack time tomorrow!
I think that sounds like a very tasty breakfast for me tomorrow!!
Bryan, it is the same ingredients, mom couldn't remember the ratios though!!
For those of you who DON'T live in the Alaskan bush, and DON't have your bulk supplies shipped to you by your sister- sans original packaging, the real recipe for bulk hot chocolate is:
8 or 10 quart box of powdered milk
a "regular" size package of Quik
12 oz powdered creamer
1 cup powdered sugar
Mix together well. Use about 1/4 cup mix to 8 oz boiling water.
I substitute flavored creamer for the regular and omit the powdered sugar.
I want to try a "real" Funty Munty and then your recipe and see how they compare.
A couple of summers ago, Starbucks did a banana mocha Frappucinno that was fabulous. I want them to bring it back.
I think I found the recipe in one of my cookbooks. Is that how you got it Gina? Anyway close enough and if it works, then great! I might just be trying a Funky Monkey soon also.
I should probably make that too, but I am so LAZY!!! I need to do more bulk stuff. I just buy hundreds of little packets when they go on sale. I think this would make a fabulous summer addition, and Of course, A little coffee added for my tastebuds!
Booster Juice, Trish. It's Booster Juice and Myke and the kids love it too! So glad you found a way to make it at home!
THanks Heather because as soon as Trish Asked, of course I couldn't remember it! I've been drinking protein shakes in the morning and really enjoying them! I can't believe what a bad blog reader I've been...so sorry and sooo missing your family after getting all caught up!
Yum-OH! I love that you created it yourself! Can you figure out the recipe for an icee mocha? My husband would send you a HUGE thank you check!
I don't know why I hadn't done this before, Tricia, but I've favorited you tonite. I truly do love your adventures in AK (I had to double check with the postmaster to make sure those were indeed the correct letters!).
I have felt a special connection with you since you spoke of your Love Dare....and I'm glad the package found you doing well in your newest surroundings. Indeed, God follows us where ever He takes us. I love that line!
May He continue to bless,
Karin
Ok...since we are living in the Alaska of the east these days and school has been canceled for the next week, I think I may need to make this...oh wait, we are out of bananas and the grocery store is out of EVERYTHING because of this snow we are getting. I'll just make it sans bananas.
